"Bryan's writing has the uncanny ability to engage and challenge my more advanced players
while at the same time not overwhelming the others. Over my 30+ year career as a music educator,
Bryan has been one of my favorite composer/arrangers. I have NEVER been disappointed!"

Be Thou My Vision
EASY Frequently sought, often elusive... vision and wisdom. Be Thou My Vision prayerfully expresses the believer's joyful dependence on the Lord for supplying these two attributes of successful living. Mary E. Byrne (1880-1931) and Eleanor H. Hull (1860-1935) set their words to this beautiful, traditional Irish melody in 1927. Flowing lines and simple harmony grace this arrangement.

Road to Chancellorsville
EASY The Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia (May 1-4, 1863) is regarded as Robert E. Lee's most brilliant victory. However, some events are not what they seem to be: Civil War historian Bruce Catton wrote that this "...dazzling victory was sterile." Two months later, with the South desperate to recoup the losses of its "victory," Lee led his men north to defeat at Gettysburg. In less than two years, he surrendered his army at Appomattox and the war was over. While a small country road, perhaps, Chancellorsville turned out to be an important thoroughfare in the ultimate preservation of the Union.

Latin Winds - Concert Band with Optional Strings
MEDIUM EASY Edited from the original publication, Latin Winds is written as a Brazilian bossa nova. Its simple flowing melody contrasts with a fanfare-like section found in the introduction and again later in the piece. The ranges, rhythmic patterns and technical demands are relatively simple, and the jazz-influenced harmonies and colors are orchestrated so young players will achieve a full sound with minimal rehearsal. Optional Strings -- the optional string parts are designed for band and orchestra directors looking for an opportunity to combine their ensembles. The challenge, of course, is that wind and string keys are not always friendly to each other. Such is the case especially in the bridge (measures 25-36 and 45-50) where the string players are in A-flat major. The good news is that the strings are always reinforced by the wind parts and never exposed by themselves. Finally, for the kids who ask why the band and orchestra can’t play together more often, here’s one of the reasons why — and an opportunity to overcome the challenge of the “unfriendly keys.” Available either as a hard copy with concert-size parts (9 x 12) and tabloid-size, coil-bound score (11x17), or downloadable EPrint

Blue Ridge Summit
MEDIUM The Blue Ridge Mountains: the demarcation between the Tidewater and Piedmont regions of Colonial Virginia and the mysterious wilderness to the west. What lay beyond was known only to Native Americans and a few early traders and trappers who traveled the great valley of the Shenandoah. This geographic barrier - and the early Virginians' desire to explore and ultimately settle the region - is suggested by a six-note theme presented both as a fanfare and march. The slow, lyrical section suggests the magnificent view of the Shenandoah Valley and yet another set of mountains (the Appalachians) that greeted our early explorers from the summit of the Blue Ridge. These musical elements serve to remind the listener that these vast vistas and breathtaking views were to only hint at the possibilities awaiting a young nation.

Caribbean Nocturne
MEDIUM An exotic Caribbean locale… a light ocean breeze, crystal-clear waters and cloudless sky… a full moon nestled just above the distant horizon… It’s the 1950s… there's a band playing in the pavilion down near the beach, and your favorite film noir Hollywood P. l. is on the case… perhaps the protagonist is the alto saxophonist in that band. "Caribbean Nocturne" is a based on the popular 1930s ballroom dance style known as rhumba (sometimes referred to as an American rhumba or rhumba-bolero). It derives its inspiration from the masterful orchestrations of Glenn Osser’s "Beguine for Band" and Floyd Werle’s arrangement of "Serenada": tuneful melodies in combination with rich jazz-influenced harmonies and voicings. Available either as a hard copy with concert-size parts (9 x 12) and tabloid-size, coil-bound score (11x17), or downloadable EPrint |
